MIG Welding, also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), is a welding process that uses a continuously fed wire electrode and a shielding gas to join two metal pieces together. Here’s how it works:

  1. Power Source: A MIG welding machine connects to a power source that supplies electrical energy to the welding arc.

  2. Wire Feeder: The machine also has a wire feeder that continuously feeds a spool of welding wire through a cable and into the welding torch.

  3. Shielding Gas: The welding torch also connects to a tank of shielding gas, usually a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide, which protects the welding area from atmospheric contamination.

  4. Arc Formation: When pulling the trigger on the torch, it signals the machine to feed the wire and initiate the welding arc. The energy from the power source creates an electrical arc between the wire and the base metal, melting the wire and the base metal.

  5. Welding Pool: As the wire melts, it forms a pool of molten metal that fuses with the base metal to create a weld. The shielding gas protects the weld area from atmospheric contamination and oxidation.

  6. Continuous Welding: The welder can continue to feed the wire and move the welding torch along the joint to create a continuous weld.

MIG welding is a fast and efficient method that produces high-quality welds with minimal waste. Used to weld various metals, including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, and can be used for both thin and thick metal materials. It is common in manufacturing due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness.
